Join artist Jeff Whetstone as he delves into the stories of the Batture Ritual, the current exhibition at FMoPA. “Batture” is a French Croele word that describes the thin strip of weeds, trees, and mud between edge of the Mississippi River and the tall, hardened levees that contain its floods. Whetstone’s images explore the micro- and macro-economies and ecologies along the Mississippi River’s batture near New Orleans. He positions the batture as a prophetic landscape – a glimpse into what nature may mean in the Anthroprocene.
Whetstone will be joined in conversation by Dawn Dedeaux, an internationally acclaimed, New Orleans based artist. Whetstone was a resident at Dedeuax’s artists compound, Camp Abundance, while making of the images that comprise the exhibition. She has intimate knowledge of Whetstone’s working process as well as a life-long commitment to the ecology and culture of Southern Louisiana.
