MASKS &
IDENTITY:
LEN PRINCE IN
THE COLLECTION
OF WILLIAM K.
ZEWADSKI
The Florida Museum
of Photographic Arts
is proud to present
“Masks & Identity:
Len Prince in the
Collection of
William K. Zewadski.”
The exhibition,
which runs June 12
through August 2,
2008, is part of the
museum’s series
highlighting
prominent
photography
collections in the
Tampa
Bay
area.
In this case, the
works by
New York
photographer Len
Prince are only one
part of the
distinguished
photography
collection assembled
by
Tampa
attorney William K.
Zewadski. The
exhibition is
sponsored by Fraser
and Maria Himes, and
Ben and Clare Himes.
Len Prince arrived
in
New York
in 1972 and built an
impressive
reputation for his
photographs that
have appeared in
Vanity Fair,
Interview and
InStyle
magazines as well as
for his work for
Estee Lauder and
Cartier. He is
especially
recognized for his
portraits of
celebrities as seen
in his 1997 book,
About Glamour.
Portrayed in the
style of 1930s
Hollywood
publicity stills,
Prince’s luminaries
(Eartha Kitt, Drew
Barrymore, Patrick
Stewart and Kevin
Spacey among others
in the exhibition)
wield the force of
their fame through
faces they have
crafted and
perfected.

The crux
of the show is the
fruitful collaboration
of artist and model: of
Prince and Jessie Mann,
the daughter of Sally
Mann, an artist known
for her physiologically
intense photographs of
her children. Now a
veteran model, the
grown-up Jessie engages
the camera as she poses
in the guise of famous
artists (Andy Warhol,
Frida Kahlo) or as the
nude icons of famous
artworks (Man Ray’s
“La Violon d’Ingres”
and Botticelli’s “The
Birth
of Venus”). Also
in the show are
selections from a suite
of photographs
commissioned by the
Tampa Museum of Art,
featuring dancers posing
with the museum’s
antiquities.
